Whether you have impacted wisdom teeth that need to be extracted, or are having dental implants placed, there are various conditions that call for Oral Surgeries. Knowing what to expect during and after the procedure is one of the best ways to ensure a smooth and uneventful recovery.
Here at Innovative Implant and Oral Surgeries, our team believes that an informed patient is an empowered patient. With this in mind, we go to great lengths to answer all questions, explain the planned procedure, outline potential risks and complications. We encourage our patients to ask candid questions during preliminary appointments, so that they feel confident moving forward.
Modern sedation techniques allow for pain-free surgeries, but you need to plan ahead and arrange transportation to and from our office to allow plenty of time for the anesthesia to wear off. Also keep in mind that you will be asked to fast the night before the surgery. Your doctor will explain the details, but this usually means no food or liquids after midnight the night before.
We also recommend wearing loose, comfortable clothing on the day of your oral Surgerie. A short sleeve, button down shirt works nicely, as it allows our staff to take your vital signs and can be easily taken off when you return home. If you normally wear contact lenses, please take them out and bring your glasses instead.
Be prepared for a stress-free recovery by stocking your fridge with soft, healthy comfort foods ahead of time. Try and avoid foods that are spicy, acidic or crunchy for at least 10 days to allow your teeth and gums time to heal. Yogurt, apple sauce, grapes, cottage cheese and soups are recommended, and easy to digest.
Unless you are instructed otherwise, don’t brush your teeth for at least 24 hours after the surgery. You may be provided with a medicated mouthwash or asked to rinse your mouth with a mild salt water every few hours to lower infection risk. Expect some moderate swelling and discomfort for the first 48 hours. Your body needs time to restore and heal, so try and get plenty of sleep and arrange for child or pet care in advance if necessary. When you’re feeling drowsy, keep your head elevated on a couple of pillows and only use ice packs if approved by your doctor to control swelling.
Recovery times will vary depending on the exact procedure performed. Regardless, it’s important to avoid strenuous activity and embrace the chance to relax. Pick up some novels you’ve been meaning to read or take advantage of your Netflix subscription and binge-watch your favorite shows.
